What is admissions testing for independent schools?

Admissions testing are aptitude tests that help determine whether your child has the cognitive and behavioral skills necessary to succeed in certain independent school environments. Results may help with both entrance and class placement for private, and public schools with Advanced Placement programs.

What happens during admissions testing for independent schools?

During testing, a licensed clinical psychologist will generally ask your child to participate in a series of activities that assess multiple areas of cognitive ability, such as:
  • Logic
  • Memory
  • Language
  • Critical thinking
  • Perception
  • Problem-solving
  • Reasoning
  • Verbal communication
Intelligence quotient (IQ) tests are not valid if your child has already taken one within the last year. Most independent schools do accept previous test results, but this is important information to confirm before completing the enrollment process.

How can I prepare my child before admissions testing for independent schools?

It is discouraged to practice any aspect of the testing prior to the evaluation, as the test is contingent upon the child seeing the information for the first time. The best way to prepare your child is to encourage a relaxed and inquisitive attitude toward the assessment.   If your child wears eyeglasses, make sure to bring them to your appointment. They should also take any medication they need on the day of the exam. In most instances, the team recommends staying in the waiting room while your child completes their test.   Testing toward the beginning of the day, when your child’s mind is fresh, is ideal. To ensure your child feels comfortable during the test, our team of child clinicians will ensure some degree of rapport is built before starting the assessment.

What are the different types of admissions testing for independent schools?

Your child’s age determines which type of admissions testing is used. The Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence™-Fourth Edition (WPPSI™-IV) is designed for children under the age of 7, and generally administered until a child enters Kindergarten. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children™-Fifth Edition (WISC™-V) is for children ages 6 and up, generally entering first grade.   To learn more about the process for admissions testing for independent schools, call The Center for Cognitive Therapy and Assessment, or schedule an appointment online today.
